Statutes and aims of the Association
The main objective of "Société géologique de France" (SGF), an Association founded on 17 March 1830 and declared of public interest by an order of the King dated 3 April 1832, is to contribute to the advancement of Earth and Planetary Sciences, both intrinsically and through linkages with industry, agriculture, environment and education.
The means of action of the Society are: the organisation of scientific meetings, discussions and conferences (BSGF, Géochronique); publications; scientific excursions; the distribution of encouragements and prizes, and the creation of foundations. The Society owns and operates a library for the benefit of its members.

The library
The library of SGF, founded like the Society in the 19th century, is hosted at the seat of the Society, 77 rue Claude Bernard, 75005 Paris, France.
The periodicals
The library of SGF places at your disposal 2,500 titles of periodicals, of which 700 are still "alive" to-day. The ancient stock is particularly rich, its strong points being regional geology and palaeontology. These periodicals, in addition to 25 subscriptions, are mainly received through exchanges with other geological societies, geological surveys, universities and museums all over the world. At present, SGF has set up such exchange schemes with 250 institutions (30 in France, the others being in 46 foreign countries).
You can consult a list of available periodicals.
The books, maps, audio-visual documents and theses deposited at SGF
The library owns at present about 20,000 books, theses and monographs, 35,000 reprints, several hundred conference proceedings, and more than 4,000 maps. These numbers are continuously growing, especially by the supply of new books from the press release of the journal Géochronique. The books and theses received (more than 400 per year) are reviewed or mentioned in that journal. It must be stressed that the library owns many printed theses that are often difficult to find elsewhere. Collections also grow as a result of gifts and donations by individuals and libraries. The stock of books and theses is already partly recorded on a database. Readers have at their disposal 16,000 references with geographical and topical key-words, which enable thematic search on the spot and on the web.
You can consult the references of books on line!
Multimedia: video cassettes and cd-roms.
On the spot consultation
The access and the services of the library are reserved for the members (up to date with their contribution), strictly for a personal use. As a precaution, you are advised to telephone before coming.

Géole: spreading knowledge about the Earth Sciences
As a separate section of SGF, Géole brings together people who are active in the dissemination of knowledge about the Earth Sciences. They work in a wide range of organisations: museums, national parks, geology reserves, and also include independant researchers or popularisers, amateurs, academics and teachers.
The high point of the activities is the Annual 3-days meeting. By making people meet, Geole members become acquainted with events and activities taking place in various regions of France.
Young geologists
The aim of this specialised section is to federate geologists under 30 years of age, coming from very different backgrounds: university students in Earth Sciences, students of the Schools of Geology, junior geologists just entering active life as practicioners, teachers or researchers, and also young dedicated amateurs, who often happen to be active in regional or university associations.
